L2 Agricultural & Horticultural Science: The Environment

This module explores impacts and issues from the production of a locally produced primary product

Course Overview

This is a one term module on the environmental impacts and issues, positive and negative, of a primary product. It will cover the various biogeochemical cycles related to agriculture and horticulture, then look in more depth on effects on water, soil, air and livings organisms. For New Zealand students there is an option to complete a 4 credit NCEA Level 2 assessment at the end focusing on a primary product produced near to their place of residence. This will also require researching local District and Regional council rules and regulations and analysing data from the previous 5-10years.

I have been teaching Chemistry and junior Science at Waitaki Girls High School for 14 years as well as Ag / Hort and Agribusiness. As these have elements such as healthy food sources, the business of farming, science of genetics and reproduction and environmental concerns included in the criteria they cover many areas that I am passionate about. One of my interests is growing healthier food as we will need to feed more people with less land. Outside of school we have an orchard, mainly heritage variety apples and are involved in sequence dancing (a little different from ballroom).
